    Born and raised in Neptune Beach, Florida, John has now made the world his home.  Performing from Florida to Finland, from California to Corsica, he's been there.  His unique ability to crossover vocally from opera to Broadway to standards of old and acting from comedy to the dramatics, has created an impressive and diverse resume.  He has performed well over 100 different roles on both the professional opera and theatre stages, including the pistol-toting Curly in Oklahoma (Apple Award: Best Actor in a Musical), Danny Zuko in Grease, Sid in The Pajama Game (Salt Award: Best Actor in a Musical), Ravenal in Showboat, George in Out of Order (Handy Award: Best Comic Actor), Rudolfo in La Boheme, Johnny Brown in The Unsinkable Molly Brown (Salt Award: Best Actor in a Musical), Casio in Otello, Benny Southstreet in Guys & Dolls (Apple Award: Best Supporting Actor in a Musical), Richard Hannay in The 39 Steps, Tony in West Side Story (Salt Award: Best Actor in a Musical), and the title roles in The Phantom of the Opera, The Student Prince, and Jekyll & Hyde "The best Jekyll and Hyde ever!" -NY Press.  Mr. Smitherman can be heard on several recordings, including John D. Smitherman...LIVE, OPERA PASSION, and By Popular Demand.  He has performed with The London Symphony, Jacksonville Orchestra, Tallahassee Symphony, The New Romberg Orchestra, and most recently The Hollywood Orchestra along side Shirley Jones.  Along with his theatre, John travels throughout the world with his solo cabaret Music of the Night.
